What is an XML sitemap?
A file that lists the URLs you want search engines to crawl and index, with optional last-modified dates. It helps search engines discover pages, especially on new or large sites.
Where should my sitemap be?
Usually at /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml. List it in robots.txt with a Sitemap: line and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
What URLs should be in a sitemap?
Only canonical, indexable pages that return 200. Leave out redirects, 404s, noindex pages and duplicate parameter URLs.
How big can a sitemap be?
Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. Larger sites use a sitemap index that lists several sitemaps.
Does lastmod matter?
Google uses lastmod when it is consistently accurate. Only update it when the page content genuinely changes.
