What is a redirect chain?
When a URL redirects to another URL that redirects again before reaching the final page. Each extra hop slows users and wastes crawl budget.
301 or 302: which should I use?
Use 301 (or 308) for permanent moves so ranking signals consolidate on the new URL. Use 302 or 307 only for genuinely temporary changes.
Do redirects lose PageRank?
Google has said 301, 302 and 307 redirects do not lose PageRank, but long chains still slow crawling and users, so redirect in one step.
Why test http and www versions?
All versions of your domain should end at one preferred URL. Otherwise search engines may index duplicates and split ranking signals.
How long should I keep redirects?
At least a year, and ideally permanently for pages that had links or traffic.
